Hard Tack Extra Credit Recipe

  • 4 cups of flour
    2 cups of cold water
2 tablespoons of cold butter or shortening/margarine
    4 teaspoons of salt
Preheat oven to 375.
Mix flour and water together in a bowl. Crumble in butter and add salt. Place the water in the bowl, and slowly add in flour while stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes too thick to stir, at which point enough flour has been added.
Knead dough and roll out until it is 1/2" (1cm.) thick.
Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into 3"x3" (7cm. x 7cm.) squares.
Poke four rows of four holes in the cracker using a skewer stick.
Lay the crackers out on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes.
Remove from oven, flip crackers over, and bake for another 30 minutes.
Take crackers out when they are a light golden brown. Let the crackers cool for 30 minutes before eating.

Happy 1st day of fall!

Next week is spirit week! To prepare for our TIGER WALK on Friday we will be keeping with our pirate theme on spirit days: Tuesday – eyepatch day, Wednesday - pirate beard or mustache, Thursday – pirate hat/bandana, and Friday – class t-shirt with gym shoes. We are the ALL STARS so on Friday students may wear any additional sports-themed accessories for the Tiger Walk such as baseball caps, eye black (appropriately applied), sport socks, pennants, pom–poms, etc.

For Tiger Walk, our room parent sent an email with additional information and a request for popsicles and bottled water. We are still in need of these items. Please reply all if you can donate either of these items.

You may send Tiger Walk donations to school or you can donate online with the Get Movin’ Crew. Our class is currently in 17th place with only 36% of our students registered on the Get Movin site. Your participation is greatly appreciated as we try to reach the goal of $750 so we can soak our administrators! Attached is the original Tiger Walk letter if you need additional information.

Please be sure you are checking Power School regularly. It is your child’s report card on a daily basis. Paper reports are not being sent home. The 9 weeks ends on Friday, October 6. All missing work must be completed prior to that day.

Our field trip to the Collierville square is quickly approaching. Please make sure to send in the permission slip! Although chaperones are not needed, you are invited to eat lunch with your student on the square at 12:15 on October 19th.

Thank you to those that have volunteered to attend BizTown! We currently have 11 signed up to help. If you have turned in a form to volunteer, you are able to attend! We needed a minimum of 11 volunteers, but we can have up to 22 so there is still room for others if you are still interested.

Jerry Pollatto, an author, will be visiting Tara Oaks on November 1. Order forms went home with students if you are interested in pre-ordering a signed book.

SOLID BURN TARA !

Week of Jan. 17

Good afternoon families!

This is an exciting week at TaraO as the iPad rollout has finally arrived! This is a HUGE undertaking for our district and we are excited to see how it is going to enhance our learning! Attached is a video that shows some of what technology does in our classrooms and how appreciative we are to the district for their support of technology.

Along with this, we have lots going on:

1. The iPad rollout will effect our schedules tomorrow because the afternoon will be spent setting up the iPads. Because of this, fifth grade will eat lunch at 11:05!
2. Thank you to those of you who came to one of the 4 meetings planned last week about the iPad rollout. We as teachers, we are looking forward to the challenge of using them across all subjects to enhance the learning experience. If you did not attend one of the meetings, Ms. McCallie will give out blank slips to the students who have not turned one in to take home. They cannot use an iPad until this form has been signed and returned.
3. Each student received a class t short reorder form. If you need to reorder a class t-shirt, please have the form turned back in with $10 by Friday.
4. New Wild Rumpus Reading Logs were given to students last week. The reward this nine weeks is a dance party! Encourage your students to read, read, read! Students who turned in a completed log for the second nine weeks will have their reward on January 27th.
5. Next week is Kindness Week at Tara O! Attached is the flyer about the week. Students also brought home a copy of this today. Please encourage your kids to participate!
6. Donuts with Dad is Jan 31 (A-M) and Feb 1 (N-Z) from 7:45-8:20.
7. Parent Conferences will be Feb. 9 from 4-7pm.
8. No school on Feb. 10!
9. Mark your calendars for Tara O Night at the Museum! This will be an exciting evening as the students showcase things they are learning! Make plans to attend!

Whew, I think that’s it for now! Have a fabulous week!

Week of Jan. 9

Hello families! I hope all of you enjoyed the unexpected long weekend and the beautiful snow! It’s always fun to enjoy the beauty of winter :) We are quickly getting back into the swing of things here and highly anticipating the iPads coming on January 18th. The students are excited for the new technology and we teachers are busy coming up with ways that they can be implemented into our learning. There will be one more technology meeting this evening at 5:45. All 4th and 5th grade parents are asked to attend to hear about the iPad rollout and sign off on a technology form. Here are some other things to be aware of this week:

Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, January 13th.
Next Monday, January 16th, is MLK day- No school!
A neon paper went home last week with this semesters Moby Max schedule. This is a great way for your child to get extra math help.
Keep sending in those box tops! Each little bit helps provide necessary resources for our school.
Conduct sheets went home today since we were not in school Friday. These need to be signed and sent back to school tomorrow. Students will receive a conduct card if it is not turned in by the time the bell rings on Wed.
Due to not being in school Friday, tomorrow’s lunch will not include bbq- it will be replaced with mac n cheese.
Donuts with Dad will be January 31 (last name A-M) and February 1 (last name N-Z) from 7:45-8:20.

Have a great week!

Technology Meeting

On January 18th, all students in grades 4-5 will receive an iPad Pro to use while at school. We strongly encourage all 4th and 5th grade parents to attend one of the informational parent meetings we have scheduled. These will be held on January 9th at 9:00 a.m. and then again at 5:45 p.m. We will talk more specifically about how the devices will be used and what supports are in place. Also at the meeting you will sign a student equipment agreement form that will allow your child to receive a device. We cannot allow your child to use a device until this form is completed. We hope you can make it!

-This is our week to help in the front office from 11-1. We only have one person signed up to help today so if you can help Wed, Thur, or Fri please sign up using this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094daaaf2ba1f94-front
-Open House is this Thursday . The students are working hard on some neat projects for you to see on Thursday night. Classrooms will be open from 5-6. A PTA meeting will take place from 6-6:30.
-Since teachers will need to be in our rooms Thursday night, we are needing 4 parents to help sell MemPops from 5-6pm. If you volunteer you would work a 30 minute shift (5-5:30 or 5:30-6) at one of our stations- by the main office or at the entrance of the 4th/5th grade hallway. Please let me know ASAP if you can help. This would be a great thing to do with your student!
-During recess on Thursday, we will be selling MemPops to 5th graders. A note was sent home about this yesterday. Please send in $3 and the form with the flavor choice marked by Thursday.
-Daddy Daughter Dance will take place here at Tara Oaks on November 4 from 6-8 pm. The cost is $15 per couple.

Week of 9/19 Updates

Exciting news! We are planning a spring field trip to JA Biztown! This is a first for Tara Oaks and we are really excited about it! In order to offset the cost, we will be doing a few things to fundraise. The first event will be this Thursday at the Tailgate at Tara. We will be selling MemPops for $4 for 1 or $7 for 2. If your child is available to help us advertise and sell the pops, that would be great. Our team will be working from 5-6pm. We will need students to walk around with signs, and help pass out the pops (teachers will handle the money). We will split the hour into three shifts (5:00-5:20, 5:20-5:40, and 5:40-6:00). If your child is available to “work” one of those time slots, please reply and let me know which time.

MemPops will also be offered for 5th graders to purchase as a treat on Friday. The price for those will be $3 a pop.

Also, just a heads up, our fall “See Memphis” field trip is scheduled for November 10th. More information to come. Thanks!

Some other weekly reminders:
1. Don’t forget to RSVP to Moments with Mom. The invitation went home last week.
2. Tiger Walk is September 30th! All information went home last week!
3. Fall picture orders are due September 28th.
4. Scholastic orders are due this Friday, September 23. You can send your order in with your student or order online.
5. Wild Rumpus Reading Logs are due on Wednesday, October 5th! If your students are wanting to participate in the kickball game, they were to read 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction books and write a well-written summary of each book. This is not required nor will it be for a grade. Please encourage your student to be reading!
6. Make sure you are checking Powerschool for interim grades. We were informed on Friday that the school WILL be sending home report cards.
